To assist those who intent to a air hostess, I had gathered the prerequisites from selected airlines operating in south east asia (SQ, MH and Airasia). While some airlines, for e.g Etihad and Qatar are not specified, I believe they too have their preference.
We can broadly divide the requirements into:
1. Nationality requirement - This is related to the employment laws in an individual country. For e.g, airlines in Malaysia will only take Malaysian, whereas SQ will employ both Singaporean and Malaysian. Other countries, Qatar and Etihad will be having majority of the crews from foreign countries.
2. Qualification: Majority will require high school qualification, SPM, or GCE O level, except SIA which require Diploma or Degree, O level may apply provided they meet other criteria. The O level qualification is considered as the minimum. Of course the higher the better.
SIA seem to require additional qualification for Non Singapore and Malaysian. For example, for the Indian Crew, the education requirement is Basic Degree.
3. Language skill - The main stress on English Communication skill. Some airlines will require a tested certificate as as TOFEL or other approved English Languages Certificate. Whatever the certificate you have, the actual test will be carried out either by getting you to read a passage loudly or by having a group discussion. It is almost impossible to hide a language deficiency.
4. Physical Characteristics - Height, the minimum for man range from 165 to 170 and for girl 157cm. No mention about the maximum height, although I would assumed that is you are too tall, it cannot be accepted due to the limiting height of the aircraft.
Some airline will stipulate the minimum reach. This actually what is required, as the crews are expected to be able to reach the emergency equipments positioned on the overhead compartment.
5. Personality. pleasant. - Pleasant personality is a relative and subjective term. If you like to work with people and to serve others, this can be your job. If you prefer machine to human, probably the career is not suitable for you.
6. Age: Most of airlines in Asia will be employing from age group 20 - 35 years old.
