Benefits of Flight Attendants

Flight attendants are responsible for the safety and the confort of the passengers in flight. Many people are attracted to the job because of its apparent glamor, as the crews are the front face of the airlines and the most noticeable staff to a travelling passengers.

Benefits of Flight Attendants

A. Benefits inherent to the job - These are the benefits being directly related to the job. These are benefits because you work as a flight attendant.

1. Opportunities to visit other cities and countries.
It is you job to serve the passengers on flight until they reach the destination. Then you may have a few days rest in a nice hotel. This is the time to visit the city and become a tourist yourself. The expenses are all paid for, as your airline would normally provide the daily allowances to cater for food, lodging and transportation.

Note: This benefits will seem to disappear after a couple of years working for the airlines. As your may have visited the city a couple of times, the attractions will reduce and now it becomes more of the job and then the joys of travelling.

2. Pay and allowances.
It depends on a number of factors:
- the length of service
- your position, all will join as a junior crew probably flying the smallest fleet, then you will be moving to bigger aircrafts. The next promotional position will be the person in charge of the cabin, in smaller aircraft or the bigger widebody aircraft. The next promotional position can be the management flight attendant.

The pay ranges between us$15k to 50k.
The financial benefits can be divided into the basic salary, the overtime and the allowances.

3. Free clothing and accessories
It may not appear much of a benefit. However you calculate, the saving from NOT having to buy your own dresses for your career, the accessories and the make up, the saving can be substantial. Most airlines will pay for the laundries for the uniform.

4. Opportunities to meet people.
You can have the opportunities to meet important people in flight. The time is long enough for you to establish a professional relationship that offer opportunities for other interest.

5. More time away from work.
An average office worker works 5days per week and about 20 days per month. A flight attendant works lesser days, averaging about 10 days of actual flying per month. That means, you have more time to pursuit other interest.

B. Benefits inherent to airlines employees - these are some benefits because you work for airline.

1. Free annual travel with family.
Some airlines I personally know of, offer annual free tickets to the staff and the immediate family free ticket of the airlines flight. If you are travelling with your children, it is a saving of about 50% of your holiday budget.

2. Discounted tickets - unlimited travel .
Some airlines provide up to 90% discount on the ticket price. Of course there are many airlines which offer lesser benefits like 75% dicounted price.

3. Medical benefits - free medical and hospitalization benefits to the staff and insurance benefits for the family.

Of all the benefits, it appears that the free travel is the main attraction of the flight attendant job.
