Medical Emergency in Flight

One of the important role of a cabin crew is to handle medical emergency in flight. That was the reason when cabin crews were introduced decades ago, airlines opted to employ qualified nurses. Now the practice to employ nurses are no longer observed. However, cabin crews are trained to handle emergencies.

As the cabin crews are not a qualified medical personnel. As such, the operation procedure on airlines, requires the crew to seek medical assistance from any travelling doctor.

I include an article of an incident involving medical emergency.

The article is extracted from Malaysia the star.

Medical emergency in flight handled well by MAS

ON Dec 28, my parents, sister and aunt boarded Malaysia Airlines flight MH195 from Mumbai to Kuala Lumpur. About two hours into the flight, my mother developed breathing difficulties and collapsed.

My sister immediately summoned a stewardess for assistance. By this time, my mother was not breathing. The crew paged for a doctor’s assistance.

The next two hours was a horrifying time for my family as the doctor and crew worked to stabilise my mother. She was rushed to the Pusrawi Clinic at KLIA by ambulance upon arrival.

We want to thank fellow passengers seated around row 16G for their understanding and assistance, the air crew who stood by us throughout the ordeal, the doctor who took charge of the whole medical situation till the arrival of the ambulance at KLIA, the MO at Pusrawi Clinic and others.

We would also like to mention the special assistance given to my father and aunt by MAS for a speedy passage from the terminal building to immigration and assistance with baggage till they were escorted to the clinic.

MAS certainly handled the situation well.

FAMILY OF JKaur,
Kuala Lumpur.

This is a plus point for the cabin crews. They had managed the handle the medical emergency in flight in a professional way.
